What's a Slif?

Slif is me!

What is all this?

This website is my way of sharing my insights to the world.
I don't believe there's another blog in Vancouver written by a foodie
with culinary experience.

What do I want?

Flavour

Good food
All at the same time

What are the ground rules?
aka "the manifesto"

  • I don't profess to knowing everything
  • I will try to make multiple visits before posting a review
  • Especially if it was a mediocre experience
  • REALLY BAD experiences will be posted and not revisited
  • I don't accept comped meals as reason to return
  • I don't review comped meals
  • I will not review within a month of a new opening, or new chef
  • I will give as much background info as possible
  • I will always explain my reasoning
  • I will add more to this list

Who am I?

Just your typical opinionated, semi-bipolar, Chinese, 9-9 salaryman who lives to eat, and am fortunate enough to reside in the greatest place on Earth (it is, I've checked!) - Vancouver, BC, Canada!

I grew up in the Philippines in a Chinese household where food appreciation wasn't necessarily a priority. Sure we always had plenty of good food on the table (1st Commandment of living in the Philippines), but it was never anything fancy. My parents did travel a lot though and with that came a huge appreciation of foreign cuisine, and we always tried something different when we ate out.

My culinary awakening really started after I graduated and began living on my own. It was my first time where I had full control over my diet, and I started finding my way around the kitchen. I always had a deep fascination with food preparation and loved setting the table when I was a kid.

Once I got a steady income, I was able to finally break free from the bonds of $2 McChicken Wednesdays and try out some of the amazing restaurants we had in Vancouver. After 10 years of working my 9-9, I took a sabbatical by enrolling in the Northwest Culinary Academy of Vancouver's professional culinary program - which completely changed my life.

After graduation, I took on some restaurant positions, but quickly realized it wasn't the right step to get me to where I wanted to be. I worked with some great people in some great rooms though and I will forever remember those times fondly.

Right now, I'm taking the first steps to achieving my next step of goals, and the future's looking awesome!
